Centuries from Noor Ali and Mohammad Shahzad, along with four wickets from Samiullah Shenwari, inspired Afghanistan to a dramatic one-run win over Canada in Sharjah on Tuesday.
Batting first, Afghanistan recovered from the loss of Karim Sadiq for 0, when Noor Ali made 114 and Mohammad Shahzad 118, adding 205 for the second wicket. Khurram Chohan bowled an excellent spell of 4-39 as Afghanistan reached an imposing 289-6 off 50 overs.
In reply, Rizwan Cheema gave Canada a flying start when he smashed 61 off just 35 balls, with Ashish Bagai building on his innings with 91 at almost a run a ball.
And although Bagai carried his team into touching distance of victory, Samiullah Shenwari (4-31) held his nerve and Bagai was run out with his side one short of leveling the match.
