Argentina U15 clinched the ICC Americas Region U15 Southern Division title with a second win over their Chilean counterparts at the Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires with an eight-wicket win.
Chile U15 though put up a spirited and much-improved showing from the first day, and for much of the game made the Argentines work hard for their victory.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Chileans batted with determination, and at one point were handily placed at 82 for 3 after 27 overs.
However the dismissal of key batter Tim Gayfer, for a fine 31 from 57 balls, precipitated a slide as the final seven wickets fell for a mere 11 runs for Chile U15 to eventually be all out for 98 in 33 overs.
Of the Chilean batters only Gayfer was able to pass double figures, although Gerald Cerpa and Nicole Conejeros both batted with enormous determination, Cerpa making 7 off 51 balls, and Conejeros also 7 but off 39 balls.
Pick of the Argentina bowlers were Valentin Tumosa, with 2 for 3 in 2 overs, while Federico Martin took 2 for 6 in 2 overs, and Mateo Arrighi bowled his full complement of 8 overs to finish with 2 for 15.
A wicket with the first ball of the Argentina U15 innings briefly ignited thoughts of an upset, but captain Lautaro Musiani batted with great authority, and was solidly partnered by the in-form Mateo Arrighi, to compile a match-winning second wicket partnership of 92 runs in only 10 overs.
Musiani finished unbeaten on 44, off only 28 balls, his innings including two fours and two sixes, while player of the match Arrighi made 30 off 31 balls with four fours. The remaining runs were achieved to complete an eight-wicket win by reaching 99 for 2 in 11.5 overs.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at Belgrano Athletic Club, where Chile will be looking for further positive improvement, and Argentina will no doubt will be wanting to secure a 3-0 series win.
