Hiral Patel smashed an unbeaten half-century on debut to help Canada win by a narrow margin of four runs against Ireland in the third match of the Quadrangular Twenty20 series played at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo on Wednesday.
Put on to bat first, Canada began briskly with Patel (88) and Rizwan Cheema (34) posting a 68-run partnership for the opening wicket. Skipper Ashish Bagai then chipped in with a valuable 42 as the side finished the innings at 176-3. Andre Botha was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-35.
Ireland replied strongly with wicket-keeper Niall O?Brien smashing a half-century as the opening bat. However, Ireland began to lose steam in the middle overs due to lack of a solid partnership. Tight bowling, led by Umar Bhatti (3-26), choked the batsmen as it closed its innings at 172-8, just four runs short of victory.
