The Pepsi ICC Americas Division 2 kicks off in Nassau, Bahamas from 1-6 February 2010 and will see five countries competing for the top spot. The winner will progress to Division 1 in Bermuda in May 2010 and join Argentina, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands and USA.
The previous Division 2 event in 2008 was hosted by Suriname, and saw one of the most bizarre finishes taking place. Bahamas topped the table with one game remaining against the hosts and even a loss would have resulted in a tie, which could have been broken by its superior net run rate.
Suriname was put in to bat and posted a respectable 205 in 46 overs. Needing only 84 runs to maintain its run rate position, Bahamas fell apart and was all out in 59 runs, thus losing the chance to win the event and gain promotion to Division 1. Suriname since then has gone on to win games against two Associates in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 7, while Bahamas awaits its chance for revenge.
Bahamas is expected to seize that opportunity when the two rivals meet on the final day of the competition; a game which many predict will divide the championship.
Newly-promoted Brazil suffered a crushing blow to its hopes as captain (and Player of the Tournament in Division 3), Matt Featherstone, suffered a back injury just days before the team?s departure.
The ever dangerous side from Panama and Division 3 winners from 2006, Turks & Caicos, round up the sides competing in the tournament.
