A late half-century by middle order batsman Gihan Rupasinghe helped Sri Lanka A to a six-wicket victory over Canada in a 50-over match played in Colombo on Saturday.
Electing to bat, Canada stumbled early on when it lost its first wicket for just 20 runs on the board. Opener Trevin Bastiampillai contributed 33 runs but tight bowling by right-arm medium pacers Nuwan Pradeep (3-28) and Farveez Maharoof (3-37), and off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake (2-31) collapsed the batting order to 101-7 in the 35th over. Umar Bhatti (34) and Khurram Chohan (28) led a late fight back to lift the score to 175-9 in 50 overs.
In response, the hosts achieved the target with 104 balls to spare and the loss of only four wickets. Rupasinghe top-scored for his side with his unbeaten 74 in 72 balls.
The two sides will meet again for a 50-over match in the same venue on Monday.
