A brilliant bowling display from Trent Johnston put Ireland in a strong position against Canada after the opening day of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match.
Johnston's superb spell of 5-23, after Allan Eastwood (3-30) had removed both openers, reduced Canada to a disappointing 120 all out, with no batsman passing 30 runs or more.
In reply, Paul Stirling's belligerent 45 off 42 balls gave Ireland an excellent platform, with Kevin O'Brien's 57 helping Ireland to 190-4 by the close.
Ireland must win the match to have any chance of retaining its ICC Intercontinental Cup title.
