USA took control in the Americas Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier against host Canada with a 112-run victory on Day One of the three-match series played at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club
Canada won the toss and elected to field in overcast but dry conditions, and after early butterflies from both teams, the USA soon took full toll on the Canadian bowlers and fielders. Lead by player and coach, Indomatie Goordial-John, with 83 runs from 151 balls, the USA set about compiling a challenging total.
Goordial-John was well-supported by captain and opening batsman Durga Das, with 53 runs from 121 balls, who had difficulties running between wickets due to heavily strapped knees from an injury coming into today's match. The pair compiled 92 runs for the second wicket, and that could have easily been more had Das been able to turn the ones into twos that were on offer. The USA total was further supported by the 35 extras comprising of 27 wides and four no balls conceded by the Canadians, and finished on 226-7 from the allotted 50 overs.
Canada's run chase never gained momentum as wickets fell with frequent regularity under the pressure placed on them by Shondell Ward, who had five wickets for 20 runs from six devastating overs at the top of the innings.
Goordial-John claimed the final wicket, which was that of Natasha Springett, to finish with figures of 8.2 overs, five maidens and only seven runs. She was also awarded the Player of the Match prize.
Mikaela Turik totaled 40 runs, including some delightful shots over the infield for four of the seven boundaries hit by the Canadians. Turik was finally run-out from a throw from long-leg that missed the wickets at the strikers end and caught her attempt to make her ground at the bowlers end. This was the second of four run outs in the Canadian innings, who folded for 114 runs to give the visitors the upper hand in the three match series with two games left to go.
Canada will have a lot of work to do and will need to regroup for the second game here on Wednesday, 14 July, 2010, to take the series into the final decider on Friday.
