Mexico and Costa Rica set up decider in Americas T20
Mexico and Costa Rica both achieved wins over the Falkland Islands on the first day of the Americas Division 4 T20 Championship in Mexico on Thursday.

The Falklands played both of their tournament matches on the same day, due to their flight connections providing only one weekly flight via Chile back to their homeland. Although they ended the day winless, they didn't go down without a fight.

Mexico won the toss in the day's first game and elected to bat in very overcast conditions. If the 50-over game between the same opponents on the previous day was a runaway victory for the hosts, it was not the case in the first-ever T20 match between the two teams.

The home team reached 130-8 from their 20 overs, thanks mainly to an innings of 57 not out from Mexico's captain Tushar Gupta, batting at number seven in the order. At 75-5, with five overs remaining, the Falklands bowlers lost all control and relinquished the grip they had previously held over the game by conceding another 55 runs in the closing overs.

In reply, only three batsmen got into double figures for the Falklands; Martin Collins (22 from 29 balls), Richard Marlor (20 not out from 24 balls) and David Hewitt (11), as the tourists could only muster 101-9 from their allocated 20 overs to slip to a 29-run defeat.

Costa Rica dominated the second game of the day to banish any thoughts the Falkland Islands could repeat their success against the same team earlier this week. A century second-wicket partnership between David Crisp (56 runs from 38 balls) and Ben Smith (52 runs from 37 balls) laid the foundation. Chris Prasad chipped in at the end of the innings with 19 from nine balls as the Costa Ricans finished on 165-5 from its 20 overs.

The daunting target was never in reach for the Falklands and they eventually folded for 100 with 4.1 overs remaining to go down by 65 runs. David Crisp claimed 2-6 to go with his half-century to pick up the man-of-the-match award.

Thursday's results set up a series decider with Costa Rica facing host Mexico in the remaining game on Friday to finish the ICC Americas Division 4 tournament.
